Anna is originally from Utah. She moved with her family to Indianapolis in 2007. Her 10 year-old son and 56year-old twin girls keep her very busy and her house a little bit more messy. Anna likes to take photographs (even though she can't use Photoshop), appreciates good music (although she cannot sing a note) and always likes to find new, fun things for her family to do (except skydiving or bungee jumping because that's never going to happen). Donuts are Serious Business Around Here

Donuts are no joke. Doughnuts either. I’m not sure when I recognized the deep importance of donuts to my soul, but it may have been when I began discussing the virtues of different donut shops that can be found around Indianapolis. This is worthy of great consideration. With the arrival of National Donut Day on Friday, June 5, 2015 I thought it appropriate to share a little of my personal research into the topic.

Yes, Donuts. General American Donut Co.

General American Donut Co. (GADCO)This craft donut shop is worth all the praise that I can muster. Located 827 S. East St. in Indy, it has a diverse and carefully designed menu. You can also catch their traveling donut truck around town. My favorites are Raspberry Key Lime and Creme Brûlée. I appreciate each donut aesthetically as well as from the bottom of my stomach. Donuts are made fresh daily and GADCO closes by 2 pm (and Mondays) so you’ll have to stop by early in the day. Donuts start at $1 but most are between $2-3.

Rocket 88 Doughnuts This local donut shop, located in Fountain Square has high quality, original donuts that also include vegan and gluten free options. Also, the Leslie Knope, a waffle has been known to pop up on the menu. The menu rotates and varies so follow them on Twitter or Instagram to stay up to day. Rocket 88 Doughnuts is closed on Mondays and stays open until 2 pm the rest of the week. Another bonus, it opens on Friday and Saturday nights! Perfect for those weekend, night time cravings.  Donuts are betwen $1.50-2.25

Long’s Bakery
I cannot extoll the virtues of a classic yeast, glazed donuts enough. Long’s Bakery is nationally recognized as one of the top 33 donut shops in the country. I couldn’t agree more. The lines are long. Cash only. Donuts are only around 50 cents each and Long’s stays open until 7 pm. Located 1453 N Tremont St. and 2301 E Southport Rd.

Dunkin’ Donuts
There are locations all over Indianapolis for this classic donut maker. Find your nearest location on their website. You’ll find donuts a plenty at Dunkin’. Look for a good deal on Friday.

The Dancing Donut
I have yet to visit this new shop in Broad Ripple but I’ve heard good things. Open until 3 pm and baked fresh daily, I’m sure you won’t go wrong. The menu is long and creative so you’ll be sure to find something unique and delicious. They also have Trixie the Donut Truck that travels so follow The Dancing Donut on Facebook for updates.

Weigh in on the topic and let me know your favorites. I surely can’t name ALL of the donut shops in Indianapolis. What have I missed?
